Vocabulary question no. 66: fast friends?

Dear All,

Unfortunately, I don't have any context for this word... It is listed in my book among other words related to friendship... I'm not quite sure what or who fast friends are. Are they people who immediately hit it off and become friends quickly?

Thanks

PS. I haven't found this word in my favorite dictionary (www.dictionary.com)

No. 'Fast' can also mean 'firm', as in 'He made the boat fast to the bank' and 'fast friends'. 'Firm friends' is much more usual in BrE.
