Vocabulary question no. 22 - can you help me find the right word/term?

Hi there,

Is there a word in English (and I'm looking for both a formal and informal variation) that describes workers who cannot be sacked? We could say He's got a permanent position I suppose but that's not what I'm looking for.

Thanks in advance!

If a professor gets tenure he/she has the right to stay permanently in his/her teaching job. I hope this helps.

In the academic world, some faculty members have tenure.

He's got a permanent position This does not mean he can't be sacked. It just means that the job is not temporary,

Except as already described above, there is no such thing, at least not in the U.S., unless you have a life-time appointment, like a justice of the Supreme Court of the United States.

Thanks guys!

I'm familiar with tenure but it's only for professors, as you said yourself.

Is there a slang word for sb. who can't be "touched" and fired? Or perhaps there is a figure of speech/metaphor that people sometimes use even though a person actually can be sacked?

If not, thanks anyway.
