Vocabulary question: atypical

Dear Users,

If the word atypical is used in the way it's been used in the following sentence, does it convey a positive or rather negative message about the person? The way I see it is that the word typical may mean average, so the word atypical may suggest the meaning of better than average, above average? Or perhaps... even special?

A few questions from an atypical student.

This is a subject of an email. It's supposed to express the fact that the applicant's situation if different from that of regular applicants who usually apply for courses.

Thanks
