Why can't I use the words 'avert' and 'in that' in this sentence?

'avert' has two meanings
1. turn away (usually your eyes or thoughts). For example 'he averted his eyes because he did not want to see how ill his friend looked'.

Hi again
'avert' doesn't work in this sentence either. To avert something, you need to make a positive action to prevent something from happening.
For example: 'because of John's quick action in grabbing the fire extinguisher, this averted a potentially disastrous fire in the kitchen.

Hi,‘I averted a tragedy by stopping the consumption of alcohol as a doctor told me that my liver was not seriously damaged nevertheless it was damaged’. Is this sentence fine?

Hi,
again, this doesn't work in this context. 'avert' is usually used when someone is preventing a one-off foreseeable serious event, such as a car crash or a building falling down.
I would reword your sentence as follows:
"I prevented further damage to my liver by stopping drinking alcohol after my doctor told me that my liver already had some damage."
