Vocabulary issues: case/casing/housing

Hello!

There's this electronic thingy with a case made of polyurethane. It's size is 159 x 81 x 59 mm. Is "case" the best word here, or should I use "casing" or "housing" instead?

Any advice or suggestions are welcome!

Best,

P.

Use 'case' if it is a separate unit used only to carry or protect the item when moving it. Use 'casing' if it is a permanent shell. 'Housing' is mostly for jet engines, I think.

Hi

I would say that a case is just the box that goes around it; housing is usually designed to protect the thing from damage

If your device is inside a computer then I think I would say case. If it was on the outside wall of a building then I'd say housing

Hi

I'm inclined to go with Mr M and say that housing is quite a specialist word

But here's a UK reference to housing that goes on the side of your house
