VOCABULARY: CONNOTATION

Is IGNORANT a rude word? I mean to say I don't see how it is rude(maybe, in some contexts). Can I not say I am ignorant of the news that Brazil's president is dead? Here, I don't know, but am answering more formally.

Can I not say politely that I am afraid I am ignorant of the number of people who died of Covid epidemic?

Can I not use the word IGNORANT formally?
