1-What does "pass down" mean in the below statement?

"The estate has been passed down the Cavendish family for 15 generations, and I now have the pleasure and responsibility to look after it for the next generation. "


2-In the below text Why it hasn't been written "I've became " instead of " I've become " ? Are they both the same meaning ?

"Lately I've become really interested in my family history back in the UK. I've started speaking to my grandmother about it. "
