Are the words "desert", "maroon", and "leave" are okay in the following sentences? Is there any difference between them?
1. They left the man on the island.
2. They deserted the man on the island.
3. They marooned the man on the island.

There is some overlap in their usage, but they are not the same.
"Deserted" means to be left alone; and "marooned" suggests being stuck somewhere. Also note that you're much more likely to encounter the passive "marooned" in a sentence.
Actually, deserted and marooned both share the same definition of being left alone or abandoned. In this case, they both work. Deserted has one definition unlike marooned which is describing a place void of people.
