Vocabulary

Hello everyone,

Is it okay to use the verb "offend" as follows?

1. Be careful, or you'll offend him.

2. Stop laughing at him, or he'll offend.

3. Stop joking, or he'll be offended.

4. Stop annoying him, or he'll get offended.

Regards,

JA

The transitive uses, (1), (3) and (4), are OK. The use of "get" as in (4) is somewhat informal. The intransitive use, (2), is not natural to me.

  • There is theoretically such an intransitive sense, but pretty much the only time I can visualise it being used is with an adverb in expressions such as "He offends easily".
