Which way is better (if any) to describe my thoughts:

"the real killer in this book came as a surprise to me"

or

"The real killer was actually unexpected for me."

The first sentence is better. However, you need to be more exact. The "killer" is not a surprise. What is a surprise is the identity of the killer (discovering who it is). So I would say:

The identity of the real killer in the book came as a surprise to me.

If you want to shorten it up, you could simply say:

The killer's identity was a surprise. (We know it surprised
