Vocabulary

Hi there,

Would you please do me a favor and tell me why in the following sentence "including" is wrong and the answer is "involving".

After a helicopter rescue mission,______hundreds of people, Samuel was found exhausted about six miles from the station.

a including
b involving
c inviting

Top answer

If the idea is to say that those hundreds of people made the rescue mission possible (as in the example), then you should use involve . If you're only want to say that hundreds of people took place in the rescue mission, then it would be possible to say After a helicopter rescue mission, which included hundreds of people (consisting of hundreds of people), Samuel was found exhausted about six miles from the station. This still sounds a bit awkward to me but is at least grammatically possible.

  • If the idea is to say that those hundreds of people made the rescue mission possible (as in the example), then you should use involve .
  • If you're only want to say that hundreds of people took place in the rescue mission, then it would be possible to say After a helicopter rescue mission, which included hundreds of people (consisting of hundreds of people), Samuel was found exhausted about six miles from the station.
  • This still sounds a bit awkward to me but is at least grammatically possible.
  • So, involve , unlike include , puts more emphasis on being an active part of something and making something happen.
