I do not understand the meaning of the verb to stage and the noun nadir in the following context. Would it be possible to replace them with synonyms or transform the sentence? Thank you in advance.

"Christian Western Europe had staged a remarkable economic and demographic recovery in the 11th century since the nadir of its fortunes in the 7th century."
