Can you help?
I drafted a newspaper report to give my students a model of what a newspaper is and how it is done.
The model report was about a seminar on the hazards of junk food.
One of the lines in the report read as: The nutritionists who spoke at the seminar lamented that today's children are very much into junk food and this state if continues will lead our children to serious health problems.
One of my students felt that the word lament here is out of place as it is too strong a word in the context.
I reasoned that the problem is really serious and therefore one cannot help lamenting.

vsuresh Can you share your views? I think it's amazing the number of times we get questions about an example sentence that contains an error that is not the focus of the question asked! The "lamented" part is fine.

- It's the "this state if continues will lead" part that's the problem!
- lament may be a bit of an overstatement, but overstatement is not unusual in a newspaper article.
