Louisa Mebbin adopted a protective elder- sister atttitude towards money in general irrespective of nationality or denomination. Her energetic intervention had saved many a rouble from dissipating itself in tips in some Moscow hotel, anf francs centimes clung to her instinctively under circumstances which would have driven them headlong from less sympathetic hands.

If Louisa was more sympathetic it was because she did not let money slip away easily,that is, being spent carefully. Probably she takes care of the money just as one does for a human being.
