Suppose the student told that his/ her choice of word was based on a decision that it just "sounded right", do I confirm that it is a valid reason or do I ask for more logical explanation? How do I explain if a particular word is more appropriate than the other.

If the student is an educated native speaker, then accept it. If you cannot explain it, then you will have to fall back on the same excuse yourself-- and it is often a valid one.
