In simple terms, the Latin preposition 'super ' means over or beyond.

'sede' is from the Latin sedere - to sit.

Thus, A supersedes B means, more or less, A sits beyond B.

We see the 'sit' meaning of 'sede' more clearly in a word like 'sedentary'.
