I'd like to know how "prospective" and "potential " different? They all have the meaning of "hopeful". Thanks as lot.

The way I understand it but this is maybe more of a personal interpretation 'prospective' has to do with making plans about the future or at least being driven towards making something happen. In other words when talking about something bad and something you're not taking action to make it happen, I would think 'prospective' isn't the best choice. For instance, I think I wouldn't say 'global warming leads to a prospective catastrophe' but rather 'global warming leads to a potential catastrophe'.

Yes, this last interpretation makes better sense : from what I recall 'potente' in latin would mean something like 'power' or 'ability'.
