vocab: stripped to twigs and leaves

Hello,
Can you please explain the meaning of "stripped to twigs and leaves in the following sentence?
"t was a slender tree stem, with the bark still on, imbedded in the stony ground. From the upper end three branches sprang out, pointing aloft at a sharp angle. They were stripped to twigs and leaves and, getting closer, he saw that they had been artificially fastened on, at equal distances from each other."

Thank you in advance

The paragraph has either been misquoted or has an error in it, in my opinion. “…three branches sprang out…” I think it should then read: “They were stripped of twigs and leaves…” meaning they were bare branches. But then it clarifies by saying that the twigs and leaves had been reapplied equidistant from each other.

  • The paragraph has either been misquoted or has an error in it, in my opinion.
  • “…three branches sprang out…” I think it should then read: “They were stripped of twigs and leaves…” meaning they were bare branches.
  • But then it clarifies by saying that the twigs and leaves had been reapplied equidistant from each other.
  • I'm not a writer, but I think this must be a form of narration that takes the truth based on visual assumption then changes it to match what you gradually learn.
