[vocab] scrupulous & meticulous

Dear Users,

I'd like you to help me out a bit with these two words...

scrupulous

adjective

1.
having scruples, or moral or ethical standards; having or showing a strict regard for what one considers right; principled:
scrupulous about defending human rights.

2.
punctiliously or minutely careful, precise, or exact:
a scrupulous attention to detail in their performance.

meticulous

adjective
1.
taking or showing extreme care about minute details; precise; thorough:
a meticulous craftsman; meticulous personal appearance.

2.
finicky; fussy:
meticulous adherence to technicalities.

It looks like both of them could be synonyms as both of them seem to have the meaning that refers to carefulness or precision... Is that so? Would you use them interchangeably? Or is scrupulous mainly used to refer to morality?

Thanks

Aren't morality and righteousness quite similar? They both convey the meaning of what is right and what is wrong, I suppose? Perhaps I'm wrong though.

Thank you for your reply!

That's what Mister Micawber clarified in response to your question below.

My feeling is that righteousness, or perhaps I mean self-righteousness, has less to do with religion than does morality.

If I may, I'd like to ask one follow-up question here.

What will you think If I say to you: He's a very scrupulous man. Will your initial understanding be that he is a person of principles who knows what is right and what is wrong, or will you think that he's a very careful, meticulous person?

My initial impression is that he is very careful to accomplish what he wants to accomplish, irrespective of any other principles but his own.
