Vocab question: when you unintentionally fall asleep

Hello all,

What would be a good expression to express an unintentional/uncontrolled falling asleep? Let's say someone has had a very intensive day and was supposed to send an email to a friend in the evening but after getting back home he/she simply fell asleep.

Thanks

In the middle of a lecture: he nodded off. "Fall asleep" is fine. Informally: He zonked out.
