Vocab question: play bowling vs go bowling?

Dear Users,

Is it really incorrect to say:

I like to play bowling ?

I know that we usually say I like to go bowling but is it possible to use play instead of go?

Thanks

You play bowls, not bowling. Edit: Actually, there are two different types of bowling. "play bowls" may apply to only one of them.

Where I live it would definitely be considered incorrect to say "I like to play bowling". "I like to go bowling" is the standard way to say it.
