Vocab question no. 8 - a cup of joe [used or not?]

Howdy,

I've just talked with two of my co-workers. One is Canadian (fortyish), the other one Ameican (thirtyish) I just said: Wanna get a cup a joe?

The Canadian didn't understand my question, the American did. Is this expression commonly used or is it considered as old-fashioned?

Thanks,

It wouldn't be understood in the UK.

If you're chatting with your octogenarian pals, it will go unnoticed.

Well, like I said before... one guy who's 31 understood me without any problems and didn't seem to be surprised in any way by this expression...

Fine, but to most people it sounds dated or incomprehenisble.
