Vocab question no. 19 - panoply, grandiosity

Dear All,

Can you help me express my dislike for events that are... hmm... I don't know how to say it... too grand? too exaggerated? Here's a short paragraph:

A friend of mine got this crazy idea to propose to his girlfriend in the presence of tens of strangers. He rented a car, a very expensive one I have to say. He got a huge bunch of red roses and, of course, a diamond ring with a diamond bigger than anything else I had ever seen before. Then he went to the restaurant where she works(worked?) and... before entering to the place he set off loads of fireworks. It felt like the third world war started or something. When curious customers and waiters got out of the restaurant, there he was, kneeling and yelling her name out loud...

I really hate such...
  • exaggerated grandiosity
Can you help me finish the last sentence? What's the natural way to say it?

PS. If you've got a minute, I'd be very grateful if you could have a look at the paragraph and tell me if it sounds OK or not.

Thank you
