Vocab question no. 15 - rap VS knock

Dear All,

I've been studying names of different noises and two of them leave me perplexed. The article I'm reading now differentiaties between a rap or the verb rapping/to rap and a knock or to knock/knocking.

From what I've read, it seems that rapping is a noise that draws sb's attention. However, I see no reason why knocking wouldn't have the same effect. Another thing is that rapping seems to be like a pattern-sound, a melody, while knocking is just random.

Can you help me out here?

Here''s one difference A rap is a quick, sharp sound, eg the noise you would hear if you used your knuckles on my front door to get me to open it. A knock can be a rap, but it can also sound different, eg if you hit my front door with your fist. Clive

Wouldn't that be a thump ?

Could be. My point is that 'knock' is a rather general kind of word.
