Vocab-idiom question no. 56: play to the grandstand

Hello there again,

I'm wondering if the expression play to the grandstand can be used in the following fashion:

I think that when JKF said "I'm a Berliner" he was simply playing to the grandstand.

What I'd like to express is that JFK was actually trying to please to audience and that's the reason why he used such words and not the others. For instance, there are many musicians who play music that pleases the audience even though the songs are not necessarily very creative.
