Viva

Hi.

Longman dictionary indicates that Viva is an oral examination taken at the end of university course.

I wonder if Viva can be used for thesis or dissertation presentations that should be done at the end of master's degree or Ph.D.

For instance, can we say I have Viva tomorrow referring to thesis presentation.

Thank you for your time and help

Cheers

I think you could as long as it refers to a spoken one. But I was a touch curious as to where the word originated from. "Viva" is a the acclamation "Vivat" is still used in the British coronation ceremony, and when Queen Elizabeth II was crowned in Westminster Abbey in 1953 she was hailed with the words "Vivat Regina"[Wikipedia].

  • But still possible and jokey.

Hi,

'Viva' is short for the Latin expression viva voce (live voice, ie oral, not written).

Some universities use this term in the long or short form for an oral exam, some don't. I would expect it more in the older British universities.
