"Ving" or "which + simple present"

Hello all,

What is the difference between these two sentences:

The device uses a new method which determines the amount of pollution faster.
The device uses a new method determining the amount of pollution faster.

Which one should be used in different situations?

The second sentence does not read properly. The first sentence is OK, though in formal English I would prefer "more quickly" to "faster".
