V_ing in sentences

I read a sentence from British Council website and found some abnormal use of V_ing,

1. "Being a campsite there were always lots of other families with children to play with": Why "being a campsite" is used here and what does it mean?

2. Another of my favorite activities was climbing on the rocks: Why is"climbing", not "climb", both of them are nouns?

Many thanks
