"Very wide awake"

Is this saying correct? "Very wide awake"
Doesn't "wide" already imply that the person is "very" awake and vice versa?

The dentist can say "Open." "Open wide." "Open wider." "Open very wide."

That's not to deny that in the minds of some people, "wide awake" is the ultimate.

We don't often hear, "I'm wider awake than you are," but it's possible.
