Very Quick Question

Hello!

Just need a brief question answered. I know that the following sentence is grammatically correct:

"Let's go diving with someone who has experience with deep-sea diving."

But is the following also correct?

"Let's go diving with someone that has experience with deep sea diving."

I'm just not sure about removing the hyphen between "deep" and "sea." Also, is it correct to use "that" after "someone" instead of "who"?

Thanks!

Hi Beau Brown,
Between the two relative clauses, the former is better, although "that" is also used with people. In this particular sentence, "someone" sounds and flows better to my ear with "who". But I would reword it slightly:
"Let's go diving with someone who has [ the] deep-sea diving experience."

Hyphen with compound adjective is preferred, but not incorrect
