00What kind of thoughts does the narrator have before falling asleep? Discuss why she has these thoughts in her present situation.02br

00Her mind is completely occupied with thoughts linked with the absolute boredom that is a central pillar of her new life in gileadan society. Offred states that “[she] wasn’t prepared for the amount of unfilled time, the long parentheses of nothing” (p. 79 ll. 2,3) and therefore she can hardly cope with it.02br

00She reflects about “paintings of harems” (p. 79 l. 7) she saw in her old life which portray not first and foremost eroticism but rather boredom. Eventually she comes to the conclusion that she, like those “fat women” (p. 79 l. 7), is merely an “[object] not in use” (p. 79 l. 14). This symbolizes again the pointlessness of her life as well as her realisation that she is nothing but an instrument of the system – she is not even regarded as a human being.02br

00Also her following thoughts about animal experiments deal with “unfilled time” and ways to fight the torturing boredom. The rat experiment suggests that even (voluntarily) suffering pain is better than having nothing to do.02br

00These thoughts occur to her in this particular situation on account of the approaching ceremony. After all the preparation have been made she is to rest so that she is in best physical shape when the chips are down. Therefore she has plenty of time to think of everything – too much time. 02br
