Vertical banner ...taken from

Hi,

Can you help to explain my questions?

Attendants and pages stood at attention along the walls, and above their heads, the high stone walls of the great hall were adorned with brightly-colored vertical banners of silk and satin. The banners had various emblems embroidered into the fabric, each banner unique and different from its neighbors. The banners are taken from the constellations. Each banner is a reminder of King, and depicts an aspect of his royal character.

1) Does vertical banners mean they are rectangle in shape, and the vertical is much longer than the horizontal?
2) What does the sentence "The banners are taken from the constellations" mean?

Thank you very much.
