Verbs with padlock

Hi

Which verb do we use with padlock -- I mean, does put give the meaning of lock?

Shall I close the gate and put the padlock? [lock the gate by putting the padlock]
or
Don't forget to lock the padlock. [sometimes the padlock hangs on the gate but is not locked]

I use padlock as a verb.

Close and padlock the gate, please.
