Verbs with had

I am often get confuse while using verbs with Had. I recently learned that we put normal verbs like have, deny etc while using did not. Now my question is do we use same like had or we use the past form of the verb. Thanks

Had is the past form of have.

I have a car. I drive it to school. (present)
I had a car. I sold it last month. Now I walk to school. (past)

Questions:
Q: Do you have a car?
A: Yes. I have a blue Ford.

Q: Did you ever have a car?

The verb had can also form the past perfect tense. Is that what you mean?
