I am not being facetious, but use 'past continuous' for continuing actions (i.e. actions over time) in the past-- something was in progress sometime in the past:

'What did you do Sunday?'-- 'I was studying astrophysics all day.'
'My sister was washing the boa constrictor when her counselor arrived.'
