Verbs after 'thought'

1. And just when I thought I was out, they pull me in,

2. And just when I thought I was out, they pulled me in.

I've seen the 1st one lots of time. And I'm confused because shouldn't the verbs after thought should be in the past tense?

Which is correct?

-Desperate.

Hi,

Let me just add that

'Just when I thought I was out...they pulled me back in'

is a famous line of dialogue from the 'The Godfather' movies. Part III, I think.
