Verbs
Are any of these sentences correct:
a) "The dog was howling in pain."
b) "The dog was crying in pain."
Note: By this, I mean that the dog was physically expressing pain.

a) is fine and idiomatic. b) is understandable, but we generally don't talk about dogs "crying". Dogs are said to bark, howl, yelp, and whine.
