Verbs

Are both these sentences correct:



a) "I APPROACHED the nearest person to ask for directions."


b) "I ADDRESSED the nearest person to ask for directions,"



(And in case, both are correct, which is more common?)



Note: By 'directions', I mean where a certain street was.
