Verbs?

Good day. I urgently need help! I was asked to identify verbs in the following sentences: 1) The flag may not be spoiled by placing writing on it. 2. Any writing should appear next to or underneath the image of the flag. Would it be correct to say that "writing" is a verb in either of these? Please help!

"write" is certainly a verb, but the way that "writing" occurs in those sentences it is a noun derived from a verb. It doesn't express the action of writing but the inert result of it — marks on a surface.
