Verbs

Hi guy,

I'm just starting to learn about verbs, and I'm really confused about the verbs to be?
I thought a verb was just an action/thought etc like running.
I just don't get how is/are are verbs? how are they even linked to the word to be?

Thanks,

We say that verbs are action words because this is an easy way to identify them, but don't get too hung up on the definition. You could say that "being" is an action of a sort. The action involved does not have to be very energetic.

There are two kinds of verbs. One type is dynamic. A dynamic verb shows an action.
The second type is "state" or linking. "Linking" verbs don't show action; they link the subject to the predicate.

I kind of lied here. There is a third type of verb, a helping verb. But a helping verb can't be by itself; it needs another verb.

The cat climbs the tree. (main verb, dynamic)
The cat can climb the tree. (Helping verb)

It's more than just that. Verbs can show states and relationships as well as actions.
