Verbs

My class was practising writing questions. A typical question was, "Where did he go?" The question was - Why is the second verb of this verb phrase - "did go" always in present tense? Other verb phrases were the same - did have, did ask, did see.

You change only the verb "to do" to match the number, person and tense (She does, they did, we do, etc.) while the other verb stays in the main verb form (the bare infinitive).

Did you have fun? Yes I had fun or Yes, as a matter of fact, I did have fun.

Does he visit his hometown often? Yes, he visits his hometown often. He does not visit his hometown often.
