Verbal Usage

I would like to ask a question about the use of the verb "identify."

The following is from the New York Times:

Hawkins’ son, Ronan Cosgrove, 16, who has been on TikTok for about four years, said that among some of his peers it has become trendy to identify with a mental health disorder.

In this sentence, what does the phrase "to identify with a mental health disorder" mean? I guess it means to say that they have one. Am I right? Thank you.
