Verb with or without "s"

I can't work out which is correct. Both forms seem to be in use. Thanks in advance for any help.

"It is important that everyone TAKES action now to make sure it......"
"It is important that everyone TAKE action now to make sure it....."

The second sentence, using the subjunctive mood, is the more traditional and more formal, but the first sentence, using the indicative mood, is fast overtaking the subjunctive and is now acceptable in less formal situations.
