The verb is "am".
It can be followed by a predicate noun, predicate adjective, or the -ing form of a verb. If you see an "ing" ending, that is the clue that there is another verb!
I am playing. (play = verb)
I am happy. (happy = adjective)
I am tired. (tired = adjective)

I am a hero. (hero = noun)
