Verb Usage: 'Resuming' or 'Resuming with'

Hi,

I am having trouble finding an explanation of using the verb, resume, in the context of continuing with a process; for example, I am unsure which is correct:

Resuming with the installation.

Resuming the installation.

I believe that Resuming with the installation is proper, but I am not certain.

If anyone has any specific references that I could use, it would be most appreciated.

Thank you.

Hello Anon, As a BrE speaker, I would say "resumed the installation". The "with" sounds like a borrowing from "carry on with". It may be different for speakers of other kinds of English, though.

I agree from the other side of the pond that switching to past tense makes the "with" less likely.

"Resuming with the installation" seems less formal, and perhaps therefore more common.

I think it has more to do with the object than with the verb(al). You could use imperative, "Resume [with] the installation" and the issue is exactly the same.

As far as I can see,
