Verb usage

Hi, I have a query regarding the use of action verbs and inanimate subject nouns. Can a newspaper report, or should it be written as "It was reported in the newspaper", instead?

Please let me know what the dos and don'ts surrounding inanimate objects coupled with action verbs are. Thank you.

Top answer

Newspapers can report, because they are representative of the actual journalists who do the actual reporting. Inanimate objects can do anything that the reader is willing to accept: the alarm woke me; the TV angered me; the baseball broke my window.
