Verb tenses with grammar structure: think + clause

HI everyone.

I have this trouble in both writing and speaking. I'm being really confused how to use properly the tenses to make it appropriate to that cause following verb THINK.

For instance: If i now want to mention something in the past, should i say :
I thought it was written in Spanish
or I thought it had been written in Spanish
