Verb tenses

I encountered this sentence as I was studying English grammar. I cannot find any grammar error but the book says it is wrong. Could you please tell me which part is wrong?

"As August approaches, every school child wishes that his or her vacation was longer."

Thank you.

It seems surprising that the book says it is wrong but does not explain why. In formal English "was" would be "were", and I imagine that this is what the book is alluding to. However, "was" would be accepted in everyday English.
