Verb Tense after 'I thought you said'

1) "I thought you said the noise came from one of the houses below"

2) "I thought you said the noise comes from one of the houses below"

In the above example sentence if I'm talking to someone about a source of noise that we haven't yet determined, would it be correct to use the second one?

I understand that grammatically the first one is more accurate since the tenses are consistent throughout but I'm trying to understand if the second one could also be correct considering the fact that it is about something that is relevant to the present.

If it is a recurring noise that is still happening, you can use the second one. If the noise happened only in the past, use the first.
