Verb Tense

I was wondering if anyone could help me determine whether more than one tense could be used to complete this sentence:

"He __________ one more chance to change his attitude before the school takes any more action." (give)

The instruction was to complete it using the correct form of the verb in brackets (no context is given). My immediate answer was "will be given", which was also the key provided by the source I had taken it from, but the vast majority of my students completed it with "was given" or "has been given".

I was wondering if there is any reason why the Past Simple or the Present Perfect could not be used?

Thank you in advance.
